15.11.14 10:58 #1 Rakuten wesentlich besser als Rocket
- und daher habe ich mir nach dem Einstieg bei Alibaba, die inzwischem mehr als 20% gut gemacht haben, auch einige Rakutens gekauft.

Look Out Amazon, Here Comes...Rakuten?
Japanese e-commerce firm Rakuten announced on Tuesday it is acquiring Ebates for $1 billion.

The acquisition, which Rakuten hinted at last week, is part of the Japanese company’s push to grow its base beyond its domestic market and hopefully, become a global player. Having made some $1.2 billion acquisitions to date along these lines, this is Rakuten’s most ambitious move to date.

However, investors are dubious that the company can absorb yet another foreign acquisition, much less one the size of Ebates, despite Rakuten’s strong cash position.
Then there is the ever-present Amazon, which dominates the e-commerce market in the U.S. Few believe it will falter in the face of Chinese giant Alibaba, much less a Rakuten-Ebates combo.

Rakuten Goes Forth

Not surprisingly, Rakuten says it is undaunted. For starters, it has assembled a very interesting mix of acquisitions. There is messaging app Viber, which it purchased for $900 million in February, the Canadian ebook offering Kobo, Spanish video service Wuaki.tv, Viki, a digital content platform and Buy.com.
Now it has picked up Ebates.

Rakuten Symphony Selected for METI Grant to Accelerate Open RAN and RIC Deployment in the Global South
- Implementing large-scale Open RAN and RIC demonstrations in seven Global South countries

Tokyo, April 21, 2026 – Rakuten Symphony today announced its selection for a grant from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), designed to accelerate the deployment of Open RAN and RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) technologies and address critical infrastructure challenges across the Global South. The grant was awarded with funding through contributions to the AEM-METI Economic and Industrial Cooperation Committee (AMEICC) under METI’s Subsidy Program for Future-Oriented Co-creation Projects with the Global South (Large-Scale Demonstrations in ASEAN Member Countries) and the METI-subsidized program, Future-Oriented Co-creation Projects with the Global South (Large-Scale Demonstrations in Non-ASEAN Member Countries). Rakuten Symphony’s selection was made during the second public offering of the program for its Demonstration Project on Radio Access Network (RAN) Control Optimization Technology Using AI and Machine Learning.

Under this project, Rakuten Symphony will lead extensive demonstrations of Open RAN and RIC, its AI-driven management and control component, in the Global South, which includes countries in Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa. The goal is to test and validate the effectiveness and reliability of these advanced network solutions within diverse commercial environments, accelerating the global adoption of Open RAN and RIC. Rakuten Mobile will participate as a key collaborating partner.

The Global South currently faces a range of challenges in telecommunications infrastructure. These include significant disparities in network access, delayed development in geographically complex areas such as islands and mountainous regions, escalating recovery costs from natural disasters, aging legacy infrastructure, substantial investments required for 5G migration and insufficient power infrastructure. Through this project, Rakuten Symphony is committed to addressing these critical issues and fostering more resilient and efficient communication networks.

Project Title: Demonstration Project on Radio Access Network Control Optimization Technology Using AI and Machine Learning

Demonstrations in ASEAN Member Countries and Non-ASEAN Member Countries

The demonstration project will span a total of seven countries: three ASEAN member states (Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia) and four non-ASEAN nations (India, Kuwait, Bolivia and Paraguay). In each country, Rakuten Symphony will deploy virtualized Open RAN networks comprising approximately 100 base stations. These networks will then be utilized for comprehensive RIC validation.

METI has allocated a maximum subsidy of 8 billion yen in total for demonstrations within ASEAN and non-ASEAN member countries. This substantial government funding will enable large-scale demonstrations to be implemented simultaneously, with around 100 base stations deployed in each participating nation. By conducting trials of this scale, Rakuten Symphony aims to quantitatively demonstrate the benefits of deploying RIC, thereby facilitating early commercialization in these markets. This marks Rakuten Symphony’s first such large-scale demonstration in an overseas market.

Rakuten Mobile, in close collaboration with Rakuten Symphony and with the ongoing support of the Japanese government, has been at the forefront of advancing virtualized Open RAN network capabilities. By conducting large-scale overseas demonstrations that include RIC, this project will significantly enhance Open RAN integration*5, advance the "co-creation with the Global South" initiative promoted by the Japanese government, and expand Open RAN adoption and market share globally. Additionally, the project is anticipated to generate new business models for foreign investment in communication infrastructure, enhance international competitiveness, strengthen economic security and improve the autonomy of essential social infrastructure.

Through this pioneering project, Rakuten Symphony is dedicated to leveraging innovative technologies to address critical challenges in communication infrastructure, ultimately enhancing network efficiency and quality worldwide.

24.04.26 00:14 #14203 RAN intelligence is growth strategy, not co.

April 17, 2026

The RAN has always been the most expensive and operationally demanding part of the telco network. For decades, the strategy has been to manage that cost through vendor relationships, rigid planning cycles, and reactive maintenance. Automation, when it arrived, was largely applied to the same paradigm – doing the same things faster and with fewer people.

That framing is increasingly inadequate. The more consequential question today is what becomes possible when AI is embedded into the RAN as a foundational capability. That is a different conversation – about new services, new business models, and a network architecture that is genuinely responsive to demand rather than one that simply tries to keep up with it.

Open RAN Market to Surge from $4 Billion in 2025 to $86.3 Billion by 2034 Amid 5G & Vendor Lock-In Revolt

04-16-2026 03:15 PM CET

A paradigm shift is silently reshaping the foundations of global telecommunications. According to Dimension Market Research, the Global Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) market is poised for explosive hypergrowth, projected to skyrocket from USD 4.0 billion in 2025 to a staggering USD 86.3 billion by 2034, registering a remarkable compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 40.8%. This is not merely incremental growth; it represents a fundamental rewiring of how mobile networks are built, operated, and secured.

The urgency behind this surge is clear. For decades, telecom operators have been locked into proprietary, vertically integrated systems from single vendors-a model that stifles innovation and inflates costs. The industry has reached a breaking point. With 5G rollouts accelerating and the demand for private networks and edge computing exploding, the rigid legacy RAN architecture is cracking. Open RAN-which disaggregates hardware from software using open interfaces-has emerged as the only scalable, flexible, and cost-efficient solution for the next decade of connectivity.

Fastest-Growing Region: Asia-Pacific
Japan is a hotbed of innovation (41.5% CAGR), driven by Rakuten Symphony's fully virtualized network. Meanwhile, India and South Korea are deploying Open RAN to solve the urban-rural digital divide, proving the architecture's flexibility.

Expanding Rakuten Maritime Cybersecurity Platform

Rakuten Symphony Announces New Partnerships, Expanding Rakuten Maritime Cybersecurity Platform to All Vessel Types and Shipbuilders

- Partnerships with Cydome and Lattice deliver critical protection for existing fleets and extend security to ship design processes via AI automation

Tokyo, April 27, 2026 – Rakuten Symphony today announced that it has significantly expanded the capabilities of its Rakuten Maritime cybersecurity platform through new partnerships with Cydome Security Ltd., a class-certified maritime cybersecurity company, and Lattice Inc., a provider of AI-powered ship design document management solutions. This expansion enables Rakuten Maritime to provide comprehensive Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) security across the entire vessel lifecycle, from design to operations, for both new builds and existing fleets.

Through these partnerships, Rakuten Maritime will tackle two major challenges in maritime cybersecurity:

1) Protecting Existing Vessels and OT

While many cybersecurity solutions focus on new ship builds and IT systems, tens of thousands existing vessels and their OT environments, such as navigation and engine controls, have remained largely underserved.

By partnering with Cydome, Rakuten Maritime will provide cyber protection for both newly constructed vessels and the vast global fleet of existing ships, in compliance with regulations including IACS UR E26/E27, IMO 2021, U.S. Coast Guard and NIS2. Cydome's technology offers multi-layered protection with real-time threat detection and fleet-wide risk management from a single dashboard, enabling "zero-touch" operation and rapid security deployment across diverse fleets.

2) Extending Security into Ship Design via AI Automation

Unstructured data and legacy workflows in shipbuilding design have historically posed hidden cyber and operational risks.

With Lattice, Rakuten Maritime converts ship design data into standardized digital assets and uses AI to automate shipbuilding decision-making, minimizing operational risks and downtime. Lattice's YardGrid system structures and indexes the extensive technical documents and design data generated during ship construction. By systematically managing these technical documents, the system helps reduce design errors and improve overall project quality and efficiency.

Ryan Son, of Internet Services Business Unit at Rakuten Symphony and Head of Rakuten Maritime, commented, “These partnerships represent a major step toward transforming digital safety and operational efficiency in the maritime sector. With Cydome and Lattice, we can now address critical protection gaps for the entire vessel lifecycle, from design to operation, across all vessel types. This will accelerate Rakuten Maritime’s expansion into the global shipping market.”

Nir Ayalon, CEO of Cydome, commented, “Our partnership with Rakuten Maritime strengthens global maritime cybersecurity standards. By providing a fleet-wide cybersecurity digital backbone, Cydome extends a ‘secure-by-design’ framework across the entire vessel lifecycle, accommodating all existing and future needs. This collaboration is vital for the physical safety of crews and the digital resilience of the international supply chain, as well as compliance with new regulations being introduced in many regions.”

Sangwon Kang, CEO of Lattice, commented, “Bringing YardGrid’s document management innovation to the global maritime market through Rakuten Maritime is crucial.
